2009 Nerd Pride Day Project
From Omnictionary
The 2009 Nerd Pride Day Project was a secret project organized by Secret Aunt Sandi and executed by over 60 Nerdfighters to celebrate Nerd Pride Day in May of 2009. The Directory of Awesome World NerdFighters (DAWN) also lists the participants, calling them simply "NerdPriders". May 25th is known as Nerd (or Geek) Pride Day because it is the anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars movie in 1977, as well as the birthday of Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
The project involved sending sets of 50 postcards to John Green, Hank Green, Helen Hunt, and Oprah Winfrey. The cards to John and Hank contained messages expressing gratitude, affection, admiration, respect, etc. The cards for Helen Hunt were greetings from the Nerdfighters, many of whom encouraged her to watch Hank's video of the song he wrote about her and John's video challenging Nerdfighters to get her to watch Hank's video. The cards for Oprah Winfrey were good-natured greetings in light of the pwning of her YouTube status by the vlogbrothers.
The postcard sets consisted of 49 cards that fit together in a 7x7 grid to form an amazing Nerdfighter-themed poster, and a 50th card that had the completed picture on it. All 50 cards can be viewed in the DAWN Project's photo album at the Ning.
The cards were mailed through the sendoutcards.com/uneva website. Each participating Nerdfighter was assigned one or more card designs and one or more recipients, and mailing addresses were provided for the recipients. Each person then wrote a personal message for each assigned card, entered the recipient's address and a return address, and requested the card(s) to be sent. Some NerdFighters included nerdly pictures of themselves on the postcards. Secret Aunt Sandi had the monumental task of keeping track of which cards had been mailed to whom and organizing things so that it all worked out correctly.
So far John confirmed on blogtv that he received the cards, and Hank has received most but not all of them. (Hank's tweet about the cards: "there were a couple missing, sad to say") Neither Helen Hunt nor Oprah Winfrey has responded in any way at this time.
