Alaska Young

Alaska Young is an essential character to John Green's first novel, Looking for Alaska. Alaska Young attended Culver Creek Boarding School, located in Alabama, USA, where she sold cigarettes from her dorm room. She was known to be incredibly impulsive.

Early Life: At the age of six, Alaska's mother died of an aneurysm. Alaska blames herself, as she watched her mother die, without even thinking to call 911. Alaska keeps this information from her friends for a long time.

Culver Creek: In her first year at Culver Creek, Alaska befriended a boy named Chip Martin. Together, they wreaked havoc on the school. For their very first prank, Alaska and Chip filled classroom 5 with a thin layer of marbles. Alaska says her pranks have progressed quite a bit since then. Another year, they managed to get a V W Beetle into the school library. Chip Martin became known as "The Colonel", the military-style planner of their pranks.In her junior year, a boy named Miles Halter joined Culver Creek. Alaska was very interested in Miles. He was a lot like the Colonel when he first started at "The Creek", but quieter, and in Alaska's opinion, cuter.

The Prank: Alaska's junior prank had three parts, including the unusual "pre-prank" designed to reassure enemies that they were safe. Pudge and Takumi set of fireworks outside "The Eagle's" (aka Mr. Starnes, the dean of students) house, leaving the dorm circle unguarded. Alaska then hacked the Eagle's computer and sent out progress reports saying that particular students (ones that Alaska and her friends had disagreements with) were failing classes. At the same time, Lara, Pudge's sort-of-girlfriend, snuck into the dorm room of aforementioned students, and put industrial strength blue hair dye in all their hair products.

Truth or Dare: The day after Barn Night, Alaska, Pudge and the Colonel sat in her room drinking and talking. When Alaska heard Pudge had never played truth-or-dare, she insisted on a game at once. So when Pudge picked dare, Alaska said four words. "Hook up with me." And so he did. That night, or early morning, Alaska got a phone call from her boyfriend, Jake, who was calling because it was their anniversary. Suddenly, while Alaska was on the phone to Jake, she remembered something that made her start sobbing. She was drunk, but raced back to her room and begged her friends to help her leave campus. And so she drove off, only after throwing a bunch of white tulips in the back of her car.

The Truck: While Alaska was driving along the highway to her mother's grave, she saw a jackknifed truck. A cop car was near it. And whatever happened that night- whether Alaska committed suicide or was simply too drunk to swerve, we'll never know. But what we do know is that she drove straight into the cop car.She died instantly as the steering wheel hit her chest.
