CPR stands for Cardio pulminary resusitation in case of someone going into cardiac arrest due to heart attack or other fatal incident the person can be sustained be chest compressions and breathing into the lungs CPR will not revive anyone persay but will keep blood flowing around the body and prevent brain death until paramedics can use defib to restart the heart the chances of actual revival are slim but it can occur but mostly this is likely due to the heart not stopping fully to begin with in TV shows and movie it is misrepresented as an almost 70 per cent success rate but this is not so so if the person doesn't revive then you should not stop until told to by a paramedic.

CPR works on the principal that compression on the sternum causes a change in the pressure in the chest cavity which makes blood flow. There is a change in pressure in the the Aorta, the Venae Cava, and the pulmonary vasculature which causes the blood to move. The blood flow will allow for cerebral perfusion, thus keeping the brain alive.
