From Omnictionary
Kansas is 34th state admitted to the United States. It gained its statehood January 29th, 1861 amidst much controversy. Kansas was known as "Bleeding Kansas", in the period before and during the American Civil War. Before the war and statehood, Kansas was contested territory over its admittance as a free-state, meaning that slavery was a crime, or as a slave-state in which the institution of slavery was allowed. The town of Lawrence, Kansas, a stronghold of the free-state component, was raided, burned, lost its printing press to the river and lost many citizens on both sides of the issue. Several constitutions were written and submitted to Congress before the final constitution admitting Kansas as a free state was passed in January, 1861. This did not end conflict in Kansas, and several battles of the Civil War were fought on Kansas soil. Also, later, a crazy woman managed to convince everyone to stop drinking.
Kansas is the state where esteemed traveler Dorothy Gale was before she grabbed her dog, stuck out her thumb, and got a ride with Ford Prefect in his spaceship disguised as a friendly tornado.
