Part 1 - Her Boss

Katherine chewed her lip. Her shift at work started in five minutes, but she was watching a youtube video that was particularly interesting.

It was just getting really good when it suddenly stopped, and that annoying little box popped up in the corner. It informed her that the internet had disconnected and no availible networks could be found. Katherine sighed and rolled her eyes. "I really have to get a better connection." She muttered to herself. As she got up from her computer, she wagged a finger at her sunshine-yellow laptop and said, "I'll deal with you when I get back." She half-expected the little box to hear her.

The the apartment Katherine lived in was right above the deli she worked at. She descended the stairs and arrived three minutes before her shift started.

Her boss, the rake-thin and hook-nosed Mr. Lindsey Resnikoff, peered at her through his watery blue eyes. There were already grease stains on his shirt cuffs, and the vague smell of pastrami, mustard, and cheap cologne hovered around him.

"Kathy!"

He insisted upon calling her Kathy, even though Katherine hated it. Her name was Katherine. Not Kathy, not Kate, and absolutely not Katie.

"Yes, Mr Lindsey?"

He also insisted upon being called Mr. Lindsey, as opposed to Mr. Resnikoff. Katherine knew he thought that being called 'Mr.' would give him the authority he felt he so rightly deserved, and being called by his first name might give his employees a sense of closeness to him. However, they all simply thought he was a greasy freak. He lived in his own little bubble of blissful ignorance.

"Yes, my darling-" (another thing Katherine hated about him, that he called her darling)"-you see, these papers I have in front of me shows me the excellent work you've been doing since you started to work here, and I was thinking about giving you a promotion. I'd like you to be my personal assistant."

Oh noes! Katherine thought. I wouldn't be able to stand all day with him constantly calling me "Kathy!", "Darling" or perhaps "My Sweetie-pie". She liked her job as it was right now, with as little time with Mr. Lindsey as possible.

"But... I thought Amanda Jenkins was up for that promotion too?"

"Well, yes, my darling, but I've heard that she has been looking for another job, and I don't like that sort of disloyal behavior. I think you're the right person for the job."

Katherine knew that Amanda Jenkins had searched for another job, as she hated Mr. Lindsey as much as Katherine did. She had even started the rumor about her changing job herself, so that Mr. Lindsey would feel disliked. It hadn't worked.

"No, Kathy, darling, I'd feel much more comfortable with you...handling my personal business."

Katherine flinched at the way he said 'handling'. He practically oozed grease. You could fry french fries in it or possibly even run an SUV. She debated this situation in her mind, inhaling, exhaling, per sentence. As much as she was epically creeped out by the greasebucket, she could use definitely use the extra money.
