May 5th Talk

Really? "May 5 of 2008" Really? Are you sure? This is clear evidence that I am far too detail-oriented. I have only read a sentence or two, and already I start getting picky. It has just been a huge pet peeve of mine that everyone thinks that you need to add "th" to the date. Even my TaxCut software did it -- shame on you, H & R Block! I am making a formal request that anyone with editing powers who actually bothers to read this rant, change the date to "May 5, 2008." Really. Best wishes, Kris.

Edit: Okay, now I've read the rest of the page and this abomination continues. Really, I'm fascinated by Margo and her disappearance. I can't wait to read more. But I am completely distracted by this May 5th business. Is it really necessary? Is it even proper? Does it serve a purpose? I'm sorry to be so stuck, but I think May 5 would be just fine. 71.30.121.112 22:37, 27 March 2008 (EDT)

Another edit: I just realized that I have the power!!! Amazing. I guess I just assumed that only a small number of people would be able to contribute and edit. How wrong I was! 71.30.121.112 22:47, 27 March 2008 (EDT)

you amuse me...

159.230.132.21 There is nothing grammatically wrong with "May 5th" so I changed it back. Have a nice day.

P.S. You're kind of a hypocrite since you changed "May 5th" to "May fifth" yet you did not care at all about "May 6th". Don't ignore your words or they'll get back at you.

Sincerely, Ben http://nerdfighters.ning.com/profile/Ben16 159.230.132.21

Actually, I just overlooked "May 6th." Believe me, if I had seen it, I would have changed it. I am 95% sure that the "th" is NOT grammatically correct. *goes to find support for this position* Best wishes! 71.30.120.193 15:18, 5 April 2008 (EDT)

Update from Kris: Like a true word nerdfighter, I have sought authoritative rulings on the proper writing of dates. Before sharing my findings, I want to state that I do not claim to write or speak with perfectly correct grammar. I just an interested in words, writing, and English, and I develop pet peeves over specific errors when I start to see them everywhere. I do not intend to be snotty or arrogant or insulting to anyone. Anyway, here's what I found:

  • From Modern Business Language and Usage in Dictionary Form by J. Harold Janis (1984), page 121:
    • "Ordinal numbers are not used for the days of the month: January 10, 19xx (not January 10th, 19xx). However, dates in context may be expressed in the style of the third of August or your letter of the 3rd (But: your letter of August 3, not your letter of August 3rd)."
  • From The Cambridge Guide to English Usage by Pam Peters (2004), page 140:
    • After giving some examples of the writing of the date August 11, 1950, the text reads: "The trend towards using the cardinal 11 rather than the ordinal 11th is worldwide, and used in official correspondence everywhere."
  • From The Chicago Manual of Style Online, fifteenth edition, accessed 5 April 2008 via a free trial:
    • "When specific dates are expressed, cardinal numbers are used, although these may be pronounced as ordinals."
    • "When a day is mentioned without the month or year, the number, an ordinal, is usually spelled out."

I added a section called "the letters".

There should be 7 in total. Plus a brief explanation of them.

Edit as you will. -Qes

Mabye I should also ask that people attempt to keep the SPIRIT of the letters if they're going to edit them.

Changing "alien" to "Lesbian"

or telling Margo to "wash up the butt"

... well. Since we're all here, can we try to make something good instead of stupid?

If not, that's fine. I'll leave you to your mad libs.

More may 5th talk

Umm, whoever wrote, "Never had a boyfriend" on the May 5th section... what? Geez, not to be overcritical, but are you serious? What was like Part 1 of Margo's Plan? Yeah, revenge against her 'ex' BOYFRIEND, Jase. Geez, didn't you read the book, writer-of-those-words?!

I would just like to mention I am confuded. Much of the content on the page makes no sense in relation to hat i know of the paper girl and her disapearence. I'm completly confused! - ChamberMonk

Letters

Moved the letters out of the immediate eyes of those who like to make mad-libs out of things.

Now, while still possible. It's less likely edits like "Alien" will turn into "Lesbian."

If they have to try and find the content - maybe it'll be too much work for too little pay off to mess with it. -Qes

If someone's gonna delete my work, at least post an explanation. Minor edits, or thematic changes are one thing - pure elimination of content in excess of the main page, warrants explanation. -Qes

Kissy Boots/ Brett Bretterson

Sorry, but doesn’t the use of these names constitute using copyrighted work? Because I’m pretty sure “Brett Bretterson” and “Kissy Boots” originated on Homestarrunner.com…unless someone has been given permission to use them?

I second that, although i doubt the Brothers Chaps will sue the Brothers Green or anything. Fafnir 22:35, 24 May 2008 (EDT)

I've sent them an e-mail, but they have not yet replied. If they don't answer within the week, I think we should change the name and band name. Maybe we could start a page with suggestions, and have John or Hank choose their favorites.

There is still no response from Homestarrunner.com. Here are page for suggestions: Band Name Suggestions and Manager Name Suggestions

Does anyone think it would be appropriate to put the Suggestions link on the Main Page, instead of here, so that it gets more traffic?
